THE SHORT-CIRCUIT

Previously, to explain what the electrical current was, we have commented that connecting the ends of a battery with a copper wire the circulation of electrons is produced. However, this practice is strongly inadvisable, since, being a thread that has practically no resistance, electrons find no obstacle limiting their passage and electric current would be very high, lowing battery quickly, and producing a short-circuit.

In short, a short-circuit occurs when two points between which there is a certain voltage, are connected with a conductive element with virtually no resistance.

Short-circuits are very dangerous, therefore, there are elements of protection in our homes; elements which, if a short-circuit happens, would open the circuit interrupting the power supply . Otherwise, due to the high current, the cables and wires may burn and cause fire.

Cuestionario SCORM

Pregunta

If one of the two battery terminals with a cable

Respuestas

A short-circuit fails to occur but the battery is heated

A short-circuit occurs but without heating

It would be a short-circuit

Pregunta

Short-circuits  in a house

Respuestas

They are dangerous but don't cause fire

They may cause a fire

This only happens in large electrical installations

Pregunta

What happens when a short-circuit occurs?

Respuestas

That all electrons flow very fast through the wire causing heating

All the electrons begin to vibrate producing excessive heating

All the electrons begin to collide with one another causing heating
